Project Brief:
Create a flea market near downtown Columbus, Ohio with key focus to uncanny precedent and existing warehouse on site.
Location:
Franklinton, Columbus, Ohio
Square Footage:
52,000 rounded
Precedent:
Die Antwoord, South African Hip-Hop group
Yolandi and Ninja, couple and dual artists, create Hip-Hop music with their own techno twists and South African slang. Zef being the slang term which was taken and used to help guide the design and form. Zef originating as a derogatory term of kitch, has been reclaimed as pertaining to a type of extreme 1 “original ever changing” lifestyle, lived by those who have 1 “true guts”.
Project Approach:
The main focus in my design was to let the existing warehouse structure be what it is, but taken in a new dramatic twist. A space that is multifunctional with “retractable walls” and usable year round, at all times of day.
The original warehouse loops back onto itself living the Zef lifestyle. This gentle rise loops its occupants from the base of one continuous form to the tip and back down which invites a casual precession to shop, eat, drink, and hangout. The retractable windowed doors which line the walls allow for control of atmosphere. When opened, exterior becomes entangled with interior, and when closed, the two are separated.
