Project Brief:

Middle school classroom setups are fluid and havean evolved learning environment over elementary schools. Classrooms and other spaces are intransition during a school day accommodating various classes, student cohorts and course setups. Design a middle school. (ADA not required)

Location:

Red Hook, NYC

Square Footage:

60,000 rounded

Precedent:

City In Sky, Mu Wei + Sam Cho + Yu Hui

Project Approach:

A Red Hook middle school focused on freedom, exploration, expression, and adaptability. A common theme of harsh grids was discovered during my site analysis. This grid system consumes A-frame huts inspired by the precedent City in Sky which flip, rotate, and scale to accomodate different, ever-evolving environments.

This topsy - turvy module sits on a controlled pool of water which will rise and recede dependent on the flood prone location’s weather. This will change the point of entry through the revolving windowed facade and grant everchanging view points. The module floats away into the park accross the street breaking the rigid grid system found in it’s surroundings.
