Sweep and Puncture
Professor

Project Brief:
Investigate design approaches, formal explorations, and the mediums within which ideas are communicated. An artist’s semi-permanent residence containing public exhibitions, and private living. Originating from sawed and pulled apart Nerf toys.
Location:
Governer’s Island, NYC
Square Footage:
22,000 rounded
Precedent:
N/A
Project Approach:
A focus on addition and subtraction with the movement of sweeping at a 90 degree angle. The Nerf toys were reassembled in 2D then brought into 3D objects which were further developed until they became architectural space. The object created a formal language which was then introduced into the home.
During my exploration of reassemblage with sawed and pulled apart pieces of toys, a formal language emerged which pushed my project forward. The language consisted of an interior / exterior argument. The newest form is a destination of sweeping, faced with extraction and replacement to experiment with interior / exterior sizing and existence. The frames, correlating with the field drawing shown, determined the shape of pieces. These pieces can be entirely or partially taken away. In plan view the sweeping shapes puncture the floor plates showing the travel of light previously mentioned. The lower level and ground floor are composed primarily of public space including small and large gathering spaces with a large exhibition area. The upper floor is the artist’s living quarters which wrap around the center main stair. The stair follows the same sweeping language as the forms. Each step sweeping upwards, downwards, and side to side. They group together to morph into walls, floors, ceilings, podiums for viewing and even seating.
